52 Facets of Beauty

52 Facets of Beauty, Facet #3

I’m spending 52 weeks exploring things that make me beautiful. You should do the same. To read this whole series, click here!

Had to take a wee bit of a bloggy break from this series, as we had some family in town for Mother’s Day and then some drama as my grandmother took a fall in her bathroom (she’s fine, but took a hit to her nose that resulted in some crazy bruising. But she’s a tough Nana, and she’s bouncing right back!).

But now we’re back on track, and I’ve got some big plans for the coming weeks. But we’ll go with a basic one today…

My hair.

I freakin’ love it.

It’s taken me 34 years to truly appreciate being a redhead. People have asked me if I got made fun of for my name as I was growing up. My answer – “I was a smart kid with glasses and red hair, and I was taller than every other student until the 8th grade. My name was the LAST thing on the list…” I got all kinds of comments on my hair, ranging from the complementary to the downright crude. It was tough to deal with as a shy, insecure preteen who was already dealing with all the things listed above. I still remember who those crude people were, and exactly what they said. And I reckon you can imagine what they said too.

But now I love being a redhead. I’ve accepted its beauty and limitations. I know that I can’t stay outside in the summer for more than 10 minutes with exposed skin, or I’ll burn. And that’s okay. I know that I can’t wear orange without everything from the neck up turning orange – skin, eyes, hair, everything. And that’s okay. I know that my hair will look like junk if I don’t stick some product in it and blow dry it. And that’s okay. That’s why I have bobby pins.

I’m finally in the place as a woman where I can celebrate and appreciate the things that make me different, and the first and most noticeable of those is on top of my head. And it’s awesome.

And I’m maintaining a very close relationship with my hairdresser, so that we can recreate its awesomeness once time starts to sneak it away. 🙂

Now you – what makes you awesome and unique? Celebrate it with me in the comments!
